2021 CAPS Seminar Series

The Center for Applied Plant Sciences is pleased to announce changes for the 2021 CAPS Seminar Series. These changes are meant to create more dynamic seminars that better serve the CAPS community. All seminars will be held virtually until COVID restrictions have been lifted and it is deemed safe to gather in person.  Please see the information below to learn more about this year’s seminar series.

CAPS Seminar Updates

New Day, Time and Frequency

The CAPS Seminar Series is returning to its original day and time – Fridays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The series will run every other week starting February 12th, 2021. Please see the seminar schedule below for details.

If you require an accommodation such as live captioning or interpretation to participate in this event, please contact CAPS administration at caps@osu.edu. Requests made two weeks in advance of the seminar of interest will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.

There are several formats each CAPS seminar can follow, depending on the content and the presenters.

“Meet the Lab” Format – This format highlights the overall work of one specific lab and includes presentations from multiple speakers during the hour seminar. As an example, the PI of the lab may give a 10-minute overview of the group’s research focus, followed by 20-minute graduate student presentation and a 20-minute postdoc presentation. The session would end with 10 minutes for Q&A. This is one example of how the timing for this type of seminar could be structured. It is up to the presenting lab to structure their talk to fit their content.

Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Researcher Showcase – This format highlights the work of multiple graduate students and/or postdocs under a broad theme (e.g. a specific department/graduate program/model system/project/pathogen/method). This format allows for two 25-minute presentations or three 15-minute presentations during the hour seminar.

Topic Showcase – This format is like the one described above, but may include faculty, external speakers or any combination of individuals. This format allows two to three individuals to explore a single topic from multiple perspectives.

Traditional Seminar – This is the traditional hour-long seminar format that everyone is used to, and is primarily reserved for external speakers. Traditional seminars may also be appropriate for senior graduate students and early career faculty.

The CAPS community is encouraged to actively participate in the 2021 Seminar Series. This could include any of the following actions:

  1. Volunteering yourself or your lab to present a seminar in one of the above formats.

  1. Suggesting potential speakers from outside of Ohio State, including individuals from academia and industry.

  1. Proposing potential topics for Topic Showcases.

The seminar schedule is a work in progress. Check back often for updates.
